P53 (tumour protein 53 or TP53) regulates the cell cycle by acting as a transcription factor. It suppresses tumours and hence it is often described as "the guardian of the genome", "the guardian angel gene", or the "master watchman". This is referring to its role in conserving stability by preventing genome mutation. P53 refers to its molecular mass (53 kDa) on SDS-PAGE.
